Guest Speaker Hiroto Kobayashi Architect

Hiroto Kobayashi, Architect, Doctor of Design Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP Japan Representative, Professor of Keio University Graduate School of Media and Governance, Liaison Dr. Hiroto Kobayashi studied architecture and urban design at Kyoto University and Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). He worked for several years with Nikken Sekkei and Norman Foster and Partners. He completed his doctoral dissertation on Tokyo’s urbanism, entitled “Cho”: A Persistent Neighborhood Unity Maintaining Microculture in Japanese Cities, and received a Doctor of Design degree from the Harvard Design School, where he served as teaching fellow for the Tokyo Studio in 2001 as well as the Kazuyo Sejima studio in 2000. Dr. Kobayashi is the principal of the Tokyo-based architectural office Kobayashi Maki Design Workshop (KMDW) in a partnership with Naomi Maki, established in 1997. In 2003-05, he served as a GSD Special Researcher. In 2011-12, he served as a MIT Visiting Associate Professor. In 2012-13, he was a UC Berkeley Japan Research Institute Researcher. He also represents Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP in Japan.
