Guest Speaker Osamu Murao Disaster Scientist, Professor at International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University

Dr. Osamu Murao is a professor at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) at Tohoku University, which was established in order to disseminate learning from the 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster, and the founder of the International Strategy for Disaster Mitigation Laboratory (ISDM). Managing ISDM in Regional and Urban Reconstruction Research Division, Dr. Murao was transferred to IRIDeS from the University of Tsukuba in April 2013. His current researches focus on post-disaster recovery process and urban vulnerability. To date, with some research grants, he has investigated post-disaster recovery processes for damaged areas in Taiwan, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Peru, Philippines, and World Trade Center in New York, as well as the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. In his research career, Dr. Murao conducted research on relationship between physical environment (architecture and urban design) and disaster management as a Flubrighter at Graduate School of Design, Harvard University and the University of Hawaii Hilo. He received Encouragement Prize of Architectural Institute of Japan 2002, and Prize of Architectural Institute of Japan (Research Theses Division) by “A Series of Studies on Urban and Architectural Space Related to Disaster Management” in 2014.
