xLAB Program

Program 2017

We are pleased to announce the xLAB Summer Program and its Public Programs schedule taking place in Tokyo and Kashiwa-no-ha from July 30th to August 12th. Led by Mr. Kengo Kuma (Prof., the University of Tokyo), Mr. Atsushi Deduchi (Prof., the University of Tokyo), and Mr. Hitoshi Abe (Prof., UCLA), the xLAB Summer Program is a crossdisciplinary curriculum that expands the boundaries of architecture.

Studio

Throughout the 2 weeks program, studio works were held at the KOIL / Kashiwanoha open innovation lab. 17 students in department of architecture from 16 universities both in Japan and overseas were divided into two studios with instructors; Mr. Jeffrey Inaba + Toshiki Hirano and Kivi Sotamar + Kaz Yoneda. In the studios, unlike ordinary design workshops where individual students work on their tasks given by instructors, studio members research and discuss on their own under the guidance of instructors, and approach to the theme of the summer program with the policy and viewpoint set by the studio.

Studios were required to function as a “nucleus” to accumulate ideas and knowledge through seminars and round tables. The theme for 2017 summer program was “community”, and from each aspects of “What is the aesthetic of architecture today (Jeffrey + Hirano Studio)” and “Potential of Artificial Intelligence in architecture (Kivi + Yoneda Studio)”, students discussed how to expand the boundaries of architecture and what kind of strategy should be built in future cities.

The Kashiwanoha area and the Nihonbashi area, where the summer program was held were selected as the locations for each studio. During the program, Mitsui Fudosan Kashiwanoha City Development Promotion Department and the Nihonbashi Community Development Promotion Department offered students lecturers and a tour around the sites, and gave a presentation on urban development strategies. In addition to this, discussions including staff from UDCK (Urban design center at Kashiwanoha) were held. A midterm review and a final review were held at the University of Tokyo Hongo campus, on August 4th (Friday) and August 12 (Saturday), and a critique was held on the students presentations of each studio. At the final review, In addition to directors and instructors from xLAB Summer Program, we invited the following list of guests.
